Training course

Overview

Technical Management is a comprehensive professional training course designed to equip engineers, technical specialists, project professionals, supervisors, team leaders, and managers with the practical management capabilities required to lead technical functions effectively. The course focuses on the integration of technical expertise with management principles, enabling participants to coordinate people, resources, projects, budgets, technical activities, quality requirements, safety obligations, and operational priorities. Participants develop the ability to translate organisational objectives and technical requirements into structured plans, controlled execution, measurable performance, and sustainable operational results.

The course introduces recognised management frameworks, technical governance practices, and practical tools used to manage engineering and technical operations. Participants explore project management principles aligned with PMBOK practices, ISO 9001 quality management, ISO 45001 occupational health and safety, ISO 14001 environmental management, ISO 31000 risk management, and relevant asset management principles. Practical tools include work breakdown structures, responsibility matrices, technical schedules, resource plans, risk registers, issue and action logs, technical change registers, inspection checklists, budget trackers, KPI dashboards, progress reports, decision matrices, root cause analysis, and performance scorecards.

Effective technical management requires more than technical knowledge. Technical managers must coordinate multidisciplinary teams, interpret technical information, manage competing priorities, control costs and schedules, address design and specification changes, manage contractors and suppliers, maintain quality and safety standards, resolve technical issues, and communicate decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. This course provides structured approaches for dealing with resource constraints, project delays, technical uncertainty, quality problems, equipment and system failures, contractor performance, documentation gaps, stakeholder conflicts, operational disruptions, and changing requirements.

Through practical exercises, technical management case studies, planning workshops, risk assessments, performance analysis, problem-solving scenarios, stakeholder simulations, change-management exercises, and an integrated capstone application, participants progressively develop effective technical management capabilities. The programme moves from technical management foundations and professional leadership through planning, resources, financial control, risk, quality, safety, project execution, stakeholder management, performance improvement, change, innovation, and advanced technical leadership. Participants leave with practical methods for improving technical delivery, accountability, productivity, quality, safety, reliability, and organisational performance.
